THE OASES HEALTH INITIATIVE
The Oases Health Initiative is a youth-led nonprofit organization committed to reducing mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in underserved communities across Nigeria. It was founded in response to the increasing prevalence of conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, dental caries, and breast cancer. The organization focuses on bridging gaps in health literacy, early detection, and access to preventive care. Many people in the communities lack access to timely health information and screening services, leading to late diagnoses and avoidable complications. To address this, the organization designs and implements interventions that combine community outreach, health education, and screening services with youth engagement because we believe that prevention is a powerful tool for advancing health equity. Our core activities include free health screening outreaches, where we assess key indicators such as blood pressure, blood glucose levels, and oral health status. These screenings are complemented by targeted health education sessions that provide individuals with practical knowledge on disease prevention, risk factors, and healthy lifestyle practices.
We also run advocacy and awareness campaigns focused on non-communicable diseases, using both physical engagements and digital platforms to reach a wider audience. These campaigns aim to simplify complex health information and encourage proactive health-seeking behavior. An important part of our work is youth capacity building where we utilize structured programs and fellowships, to train students and young volunteers to become health advocates within their communities. This creates a multiplier effect, extending the reach and sustainability of our interventions.Through the combination of education, screening, and youth engagement, our programmes are designed to address both immediate needs and sustainable behavioral change.Through this integrated approach, The Oases Health Initiative is not only addressing immediate health needs but also contributing to long-term, community centered solutions for equitable healthcare access. We have directly impacted over 80,000 individuals across underserved communities in Nigeria through health screenings, education programmes, and advocacy efforts. These interventions have focused on increasing awareness, enabling early detection, and improving preventive health behaviors.
